I purchased this item for my niece as a 12th birthday present, because my husband's niece & nephew had one that they were obsessed with riding. My niece & her 17-year-old brother have both been using this 'street surfing' board since the snow melted, & absolutely love it! They mostly use it on their basketball court, so it's a nice, smooth surface. I'm not sure how well this would do on less-even surfaces. But if you have a smooth street/lot/court to use, & an athletic older child or teen, this should make a great gift.
